Korea Power Plug Guide: Adapter or Voltage Converter?

고구마 Reading Time 읽는 시간 약 8분

Before choosing a plug adapter for Korea, check the device you want to power. A plug that fits the wall does not prove that a hair tool or charger can use the local electrical supply. Shape and voltage are separate questions, and treating them separately avoids an expensive mistake.

Begin with the input label

The Korea Tourism Organization's electricity guide states that Korea's standard supply is 220 volts at 60 hertz and describes outlets with two round holes. Read the input specifications printed on your charger or appliance and the manufacturer's instructions before connecting it.

For example, a charger explicitly marked for an input range of 100–240 V, 50/60 Hz includes Korea's standard supply within that range. This is an illustrative label example, not a claim about your device. A product limited to 110 or 120 V must not be treated as compatible just because an adapter makes it fit.

Adapter and converter are not interchangeable

A plug adapter changes the connection shape. It does not, merely by being an adapter, reduce the supply voltage. A voltage converter or transformer has a different job and must suit the device's requirements. Power capacity, grounding and the manufacturer's restrictions matter as well as voltage.

For a high-power item such as a hair dryer, using a suitable hotel-provided appliance can be simpler than planning around an unfamiliar converter. Ask the accommodation what it supplies before packing. Do not choose equipment based only on a photograph or a phrase such as “universal.”

A practical packing check

Make a short list of each device, its stated input range and the connector or power supply it requires. Check the full chain: the wall adapter, charger, cable and device. A USB connector's shape alone does not guarantee the charging standard or output that your device needs.

Bring equipment that fits securely and retains any required grounding. Follow the device and adapter instructions concerning loading. Avoid a setup that is loose, damaged or overloaded, and do not use a stack of improvised adapters to make an unsuitable device fit.

If the plug or device is not working

  1. Stop if the fit is loose or the equipment is damaged. Do not hold a connector in place by hand.
  2. Recheck the appliance and adapter specifications while unplugged.
  3. Ask accommodation staff whether that outlet requires a room power switch or has a known fault.
  4. Ask for suitable equipment rather than improvising a repair.
  5. If there is heat, sparking or a burning smell, stop using the setup and notify staff. Do not attempt electrical repairs.

What to ask at your accommodation

어댑터 빌릴 수 있나요? (Eodaepteo billil su innayo?) — Can I borrow an adapter?

드라이어가 있나요? (Deuraieoga innayo?) — Is there a hair dryer?

이 콘센트가 작동하나요? (I konsenteuga jakdonghanayo?) — Does this outlet work?

Nationwide supply, accommodation-specific equipment

The standard supply described above applies across Korea, including Seoul, Busan and Jeju. The available sockets, loan adapters and appliances still depend on your room. A photo from one hotel should not be used as proof of what another property provides.

Common questions

Can I use a plug adapter with any appliance?

No. First check the appliance's input specifications, manufacturer guidance and power requirements.

Does a phone charger always support Korea's voltage?

Check its actual label. Do not assume compatibility from the device category or the brand alone.
