Restaurant Waitlists in Korea: Join the Queue Without a Korean Phone Number
A queue outside a Korean restaurant does not always mean you should simply stand at the end. Some restaurants call names from a paper list, others use a tablet or QR code, and some allow remote waiting through an app. The first useful step is to find out how this particular restaurant registers a party.
At the entrance: find the registration point
Look for a host, a sign reading 웨이팅 (waiting), a tablet, a QR code or a paper list. Ask “웨이팅은 어떻게 하나요?” (“How do I join the waitlist?”). Tell the host the number of people: “두 명이에요” for two. Do not assume a line outside is the list itself. If the restaurant does not accept waitlists, ask when it expects to seat walk-ins or choose another place.

Paper, tablet, QR code or app?
On paper, you may write your name and party size. A tablet might ask for a phone number and issue a queue number; a QR code can open a registration page. Check whether it asks you to stay nearby, whether you will receive a text, and how the restaurant calls the next party. If it requires a Korean number you do not have, speak to staff before entering someone else’s number. A friend’s number could receive the call while you miss it.
The Korea Tourism Organization describes QR-based on-site registration at an example restaurant. It also describes CATCHTABLE Global as an option for some participating restaurants, including account creation without a Korean phone number and remote waiting where available. Neither method applies to every restaurant. Check the restaurant’s listing, whether the waitlist is open, and any arrival or check-in deadline before making the trip.

What to watch after registering
Keep your queue number or registration confirmation. Check whether the estimate is in minutes or in parties ahead; both can change as tables turn over. Stay within the area the restaurant requires. When the host calls a name or number, show your confirmation and ask if it is your turn. If your party size changes, tell the host rather than assuming the original slot still works.
If you miss the call, ask staff whether the entry can be restored. Some systems cancel or move a party after a missed call; policies differ. If you decide to eat elsewhere, cancel your entry in the app or tell staff so the queue is accurate for everyone.

Useful questions at the door
The romanization below is a reading aid; show the Korean text to staff if pronunciation is difficult.
- How do I join the waitlist? — 웨이팅은 어떻게 하나요?
Weiting-eun eotteoke hanayo? - Is it okay if I do not have a Korean phone number? — 한국 전화번호가 없는데 괜찮나요?
Hanguk jeonhwabeonhoga eomneunde gwaenchannayo? - About how long should we wait? — 얼마나 기다려야 하나요?
Eolmana gidaryeoya hanayo? - Do we need to stay nearby? — 근처에 있어야 하나요?
Geuncheoe isseoya hanayo? - We missed our turn. — 순서를 놓쳤어요.

At the door, ask how to register. Before walking away, confirm how you will be called and when you must return. For an app-based list, verify the exact restaurant and branch. A reservation is a different service from a waitlist and may have its own conditions.

Before you head back to the restaurant
If the screen shows three parties ahead, that is not a promise of a three-table or fifteen-minute wait. Party sizes, table sizes and meal lengths affect seating. Keep notifications on, check the exact branch, and return according to the restaurant’s instructions. If you are travelling with a child or someone who cannot stand for long, ask whether there is a place to wait before leaving the entrance.
Once seated, use our Korean menu guide to understand dish names and serving sizes. Registration, ordering and payment are separate steps; joining a queue does not place a food order.
Common questions
Can I join a restaurant waitlist without a Korean phone number?
It depends on the restaurant and system. Ask staff about an on-site alternative; CATCHTABLE Global supports some participating restaurants without a Korean number. Check the exact listing before travelling.
Does joining a waitlist reserve a table at a fixed time?
A waitlist is different from a reservation. Follow the restaurant’s call, check-in and missed-turn rules; the estimated wait can change.
