Hanbok Rental in Seoul: Fees, Deposits & Return Rules

The price on a hanbok rental sign is only the start of the decision. Before choosing a color, confirm the complete cost, when the return clock starts and what the shop asks you to leave as a deposit. A clear rental agreement leaves more time for enjoying the outfit and less time worrying about the deadline.

Compare the same package

Ask what the quoted fee covers: the outfit, rental duration, accessories, hair styling and any fitting limit. A longer rental can be useful if you want a meal or a slow walk, but do not assume you can extend it at the same hourly rate. Ask for the late-return rule before leaving.

The Korea Tourism Organization's hanbok page notes that styles and fees vary by program. As a concrete operator example, Oneday Hanbok publishes its own prices and conditions. Its conditions belong to that shop; they are not a nationwide rental standard.

Allow time for fitting

Tell the shop your rough size and whether children or several people need outfits. Ask about availability if fit is a concern. Walk, sit and raise your arms during the fitting so staff can help with comfort before you set out. Choose footwear suitable for the walking route rather than assuming decorative shoes will be comfortable.

Ask where you can keep ordinary clothes and bags, and what happens if it rains. Protect accessories and avoid dragging fabric along the ground. Photograph the outfit's existing damage with staff present if anything is unclear, and retain the rental record.

Deposit and identification

Ask exactly what identification or deposit the shop requires and how it is returned. Some operators request a passport; alternatives depend on the operator. Oneday's published FAQ provides an example of an alternative arrangement, but another shop can use different terms. Clarify those terms before travelling to the shop, rather than assuming a passport copy is always accepted.

Keep the agreed return time, deposit amount and receipt together. If you are not comfortable with the requested document custody, choose a shop whose stated arrangement suits you. Do not confuse a shop's policy with a government requirement.

Palace admission is a separate check

The Royal Palaces and Tombs Center's hanbok guidelines explain the outfit requirements for qualifying free admission, including the upper and lower garments. The concession includes foreign visitors who meet the guidelines. A rental outfit's marketing name alone does not establish eligibility.

Check the palace's opening date and the ticket rules for the exact visit or program. Do not assume ordinary admission rules cover every special event or additional area.

1. Confirm the return deadline and shop closing time.
2. Contact the shop before you are late and ask about extension costs.
3. If an accessory is lost or fabric is damaged, tell staff and follow the agreed terms.
4. On return, check that the outfit and accessories are recorded as returned and collect the deposit or document as agreed.
