How to Take an Intercity Bus in Korea (Foreigner Guide)

고구마 Reading Time 읽는 시간 약 9분

Many visitors reach instinctively for the KTX for every trip and never discover that Korea’s long-distance buses can reach places the train doesn’t — often at a different price, and sometimes closer to where you’re actually headed. For smaller towns, the coast, and mountain regions, the bus can be a practical alternative when rail service is limited or unavailable. So learning how to take an intercity bus in Korea opens up a whole layer of the country that the rail network doesn’t cover as directly.

Express vs. Intercity: Know the Difference

Korea’s long-distance buses come in two main categories, and the terms can be confusing, so here’s the basic distinction:

  • 고속버스 (express bus): generally operates between major terminals, often using highways and making relatively few stops.
  • 시외버스 (intercity bus): serves a wider range of destinations and may make more stops, including smaller towns and regional areas.

Going city-to-city (Seoul to Gwangju, say)? A 고속버스 may be one of the options available. Heading somewhere smaller? A 시외버스 may offer a more direct route depending on the destination — and that’s one of its strengths.

Where You Catch Them

Buses leave from terminals, rather than train stations. In Seoul, major terminals include the Express Bus Terminal (고속버스터미널), Central City, and Dong-Seoul Terminal. The terminal you need depends on your destination and the operator, so check the departure terminal before heading out.

Booking Your Ticket

A few options:

  • Apps and websites such as Kobus for many express-bus routes and Bustago for many intercity-bus routes, with English availability varying by service.
  • T-money GO can provide access to multiple transportation booking services in one place.
  • Terminal counters and machines — a useful alternative if an app does not accept your payment method or you prefer to buy in person.

Before traveling, check the current booking platform, payment options, and English-language support for your specific route.

Splurge a Little: Seat Classes

Here’s the tip that can make a longer bus trip more comfortable. Depending on the route and bus, you may see different seat grades:

  • 일반 (standard): the basic seat class.
  • 우등 (premium): wider seats with more space than standard seating.
  • 프리미엄 (premium): more spacious seats with additional reclining and other comfort features on routes where this class is offered.

There may also be 심야 (late-night) services on selected routes. For a longer journey, 우등 can be a comfortable upgrade — say “우등으로 주세요.”

Don’t Skip the Rest Stop

On some longer routes, the bus may stop at a highway rest stop (휴게소) during the journey. These stops are a familiar part of long-distance travel in Korea, with food such as hot walnut cakes, ramyeon, corn dogs, and fresh corn often available.

The driver or onboard display will usually indicate the departure time, so keep track of when you need to return to the bus. Rest-stop stops and their duration can vary by route and operating conditions, so don’t assume every bus will stop for the same amount of time.

The Phrases to Have Ready

  • Is there a bus to Busan? → 부산 가는 버스 있어요? (bu-san ga-neun beo-seu i-sseo-yo?)
  • What time are the buses? → 몇 시 차 있어요? (myeot si cha i-sseo-yo?)
  • A premium seat, please → 우등으로 주세요 (u-deung-eu-ro ju-se-yo)
  • One-way / round trip → 편도 / 왕복 (pyeon-do / wang-bok)

Fares, apps, schedules, available seat classes, and terminal arrangements can change over time, so confirm the current details when you book. The bus may not get the same attention as the KTX, but for reaching parts of Korea that are less directly served by rail, it can be a practical and comfortable option. If your route offers 우등, consider the extra space for a longer ride, and if your bus has a rest-stop break, enjoy one of the small food traditions that makes long-distance bus travel in Korea memorable.
